"Don't Give Up" --Songs and Scripture Series

Shop and Save with ibotta

Through the past few weeks of struggling with set backs and general stress of life, there have been some themes, songs, and scriptures that God keeps bringing back to me. When there are things that I have that sure feeling that it is from Him, I get so excited and want to share, and I feel like that is what He wants us to do.
"As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard." Acts 4:20

For a long time I've liked to do Bible studies with songs and how they relate to my life and draw on scripture, and I can end up going so much farther than a simple devotion, learning so much! The words of music can be so uplifting, too. So I want to take what has touched my heart and life through songs and scripture lately and share it for anyone else who may need some encouragement from it as well.

by Calling Glory

This time your heart said it's had enough
Sick and tired of everything that's so messed up
...praying hard somehow that your life will change
When you feel like you don't know what to do
Stuck inside this maze you can't go through
...these walls around you are caving in
And your life seems like it is wearing thin
Your hope is drowning in despair
Looks like you're not going anywhere
Step inside this heart and then you'll see
Such a love that is so amazing
...Don't give up
Help is surely on its way
Don't give up
The dark is breaking in today
Just keep on moving through these storms
Soon enough you'll find the door
Just don't give up

This song came on my playlist one morning as the first one shuffled while I was doing core. It’s an older song, but considering “don’t give up” was something I had had to keep telling myself through these toughest days, it was fresh for the time. It has seemed like it is one thing after another, and I didn’t know how much more I could take. I want change, but I don’t know when or what will come. At times I just don’t know what to do with myself and feel like I can’t break out of whatever the issue at hand is. One day, I really began to lose hope in my future like I may never get to enjoy the things I love again. I can’t get over these injuries that are all connected to each other, can’t get my use of time or doing things on track. But I have to embrace His love that is greater than all my pains and challenges and not give up. Though some days are dark, there is light of another day coming. Now I can see, a few days later, that I was in pain and distress, but I was also so close to my back injury having relief. Now I am in a different physical pain, but I’ve got to get through this one, too. God may have relief for this waiting on me soon, too.

What God’s Word says:

“But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” 2 Chronicles 15:7

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out of us, fixing our eyes on Jesus…consider Him who endured such opposition so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3

“…Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14

“Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the Word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly, we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God…for what we preach is not of ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as servants for Jesus’s sake. For God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness’…We have this treasure to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not us. We are hard-pressed on every side but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our bodies the death of Jesus, that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our bodies.” 2 Corinthians 4:1-2, 5-10 (***see a note below!)

“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion in the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6

“Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary; what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

“I know that You can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.” Job 42:2

“Consider it pure joy, brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4

“We know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade…In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, honor, and glory when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen Him, you believe in Him and love Him, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” 1 Peter 1:3-9

***While many of these passages came to mind right away, this was one that really jumped out as I began searching.>>Because of God’s mercy, I have this opportunity to share His goodness, and that is enough to keep me going! I can turn from lying and deceiving (myself and any others), hiding the pain that I bring on myself, using God’s power to my own advantage. I must be true, both for the sake of my own faith and to show the truth to others. Everything I say and do is because of and for God, not myself. I am useless and selfish on my own. My purpose is to serve Christ and others and to bring Him glory. He is and wants us to also be the lights shining into darkness. All the good things that happen, possessions, experiences, feelings, blessings, etc. are all gifts from God to be used to show His power. I did not get here by my own efforts. At times it feels like everything is caving in on me, but I do not get crushed. I get confused and discouraged, but I am never without something to cling to. Outside people and circumstances may work against me, but Christ never leaves me. I’m never alone. He is always there and always sends me reminders of His promises. I get knocked down, but I am never done for good. Each day I ought to walk as one displaying Christ and what He has done so that the life-saving message may be seen through whatever I do.

Over the Hump (fluffy dog, burnt backside)
9:09 AM on Wednesday, May 23

This day started out rough, but I got over the hump. It was also hump day, Wednesday, so I guess that fit. I've been super tired, and this run was tough, especially since there was a lot of wind one direction compared to what it has been being. I told myself during the run that it was good prep for the beach next week. I was glad to have more time at home before going to work later in the afternoon, so I went over to the old house and did one of those routes. I was feeling down and discouraged all morning, but on the run, I started getting over that hump, too. Mental energy affects physical energy, which didn't help me then, but once I got motivated, it got better. (There is also this huge fluffy dog in the neighborhood, and the past few times I've been there, he has followed me home. He's like a bear; I could cuddle him, but he is basically as big as I am.) I really need to change some things if I want to be able to have more productive days, keep my job while still doing all my cross country training, eat well, sleep well, and have time for family and friends.

Mom made dinner while I was gone running (yes, in the morning) because she was going to the old house to mow and get stuff ready for the yard sale. This let me have some time to myself and have a good meal to take with me. Thanks to Mom for making sure I get the fuel!

It was a beautiful day, so I was determined to take advantage of it! This week I've finally gotten to start working on my tan and getting used to the heat, but I know the beach will still kill me this year! I always tend to lay/sit more where my front gets more sun, so I laid on my belly all I could. That ended up being the whole time I was outside...hours! It was the hottest day I've had so far and the most sun I've gotten, hence the "burnt backside," but it wasn't bad.

The (second) best part of the day was my fort! I was a creative kid, and it came back out today. I wanted to be outside, but also had so many things to do and look at on my laptop or iPad (emails, articles, calendars, Bible study, etc). As you probably know, you can't see those things well in the sun. BUT I made a cover for my head, papers, books, snacks, etc, while my body was still in the sun! That also helped me keep myself from overheating. To make it even better, there was an outlet right there, too. This was one of the greatest ideas I've had.

My Bible study that I did here today added to this day getting better! It was like a direct answer to my prayers. I've been so indecisive over what to do for my job and balancing my life, asking God to show me what to do. I have gotten so many little messages from God along the way the past few months, I had no doubt that He would somehow guide me, but I didn't know when. This Daniel Plan devotion started with Isaiah 48:17. WOW. The theme of the devotion was resilience. Dictionary definition-the ability to bounce back and recover from illness, adversity, depression, and the like. WOW. It kept on, hitting at simple things like if you don't eat a good breakfast, you can still eat a good lunch. If you make a wrong decision, you can learn from it and start fresh each day. When we face challenges, we can see them as opportunities. These are the things that I have been keeping in my mind to help me through the tough days. Yeah, the day may have started out rough, but every step of the day is a new opportunity.

I also worked from 4:45-10:30, training two new employees, but it was good, so at least that wasn't too stressful. My job is more tiring than you would think! But good coworkers make it so much better. Then I got to watch NBA on the couch and eat some more dinner with mom and dad. That is my favorite way to end the day.

School-Starting Scriptures

Yes, I know school started months ago...I just realized that this was still saved, with no words, in my drafts.  I have wanted to share these things for so long!  At the end of summer, I did some redecorating and designing and Bible Studying to get me off to a positive start when I went back to school.

My dry erase board in my room got redrawn on.
No boundaries was my summer and season-starting motto, expressing that I didn't want to set any limits on what I could do this year.
I love Colossians 4:5-6, because people are always watching. Life is short. I want to use every moment to the max!
I am third means the same thing as JOY and the other Bible verse: Jesus first, then serving others, myself last.
Every time the month changes and I flip my calendar, I post a picture of the page and find a corresponding verse.
"Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near."
Reading my Bible before bed always helps me go to sleep more at peace.  At any time of day, it will give me a boost!

****
I have no picture to go with this part, but I believe that it is my favorite part of this whole post.  Some days my devotion just hits me right on the money.  August 2nd was one of those days.
It started out with one of my favorite verses: John 16:33, "In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world."
Being a Christian doesn't mean that we will get deliverance from trouble.  Trouble comes to everyone quite often!  Being a Christian means that we can find deliverance in trouble.
God also doesn't give us overcoming life.  He gives us life as we overcome.  We gain strength in the struggles!
When we spend ourselves physically, we become exhausted, but by spending ourselves spiritually, we gain more and more strength.
I love the comparisons used in that day's devotion!  I am all the way through November 14th now, and that is still the best day I have come across.
(Oswald Chamber's My Utmost for His Highest daily devotion, August 2nd)
I don't like cherries, so I used them to represent the bad fruits that we may produce in life, such as jealousy, slander, and disrespect.  Pineapple is probably the best fruit out there, so I used it to represent the good things we can produce to feed others, like the fruits of the spirit!
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control
What kind of fruit is your life producing?  Will it nourish your own life and the lives of others, or will it make you and others sick?

This is very challenging to me. I often fall prey to the comparison trap. I want to be the best!  Always!  That's what I tend to set my focus on, and it hurts me sometimes, especially when I'm not number one. This is at anything really, not just sports. To keep my head on straight, I must remember that God did not create me to be the best all the time, just my best, and His plan will make me who in supposed to be.

These next few pictures are many verses and such that I had kept up with for a while and then put them all together to have in my binders to read through during school. We went over this above in Sunday school one weekend.

My friend Abby, who I greatly admire her spirit for The Lord, made this sketch!

One of God's greatest commands is to love. It is the #1 way to share Him with others!

TimeHop showed me another not-coincidence:  one day this was on my TimeHop, then I went to biblegateway app for the verse of the day, and they were the same!

I need this verse as a reminder daily!  I try to make my own plans and follow through with them, but that is not a wise idea!  No matter how hard I try, God's plans will not be overtaken.  This can give me peace if I allow it.

I love how Peanuts is so gospel-centered.  This is another day off of my flip-calendar.

Whoo is this a good one or what!  Although life is insane right now, with so much going on in every aspect of it, I can cling to my God and know that He will never let His children be defeated!

It is so nice to be able to have alone time to dig into God's Word.  This is one morning after our team Bible Study and before I ran.  It is a blessing to have the class schedule that I have.  Not only are verses an encouraging way to get motivation for serving the Lord, but so is music!  I have many songs that I have been looking through the lyrics to and digging into the Biblical backgrounds...more to come as I learn from songs, I will share!

Jeremy Camp Concert

Part of my birthday gift from my parents was tickets to a Jeremy Camp concert last Saturday night at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville, Tennessee, just about 30 minutes down the road.  Little did I know at the time I received these tickets that it would be just what I needed to rekindle my spirit this night.  I had been feeling unfocused and unmotivated, like I had lost the joy that I had been so filled with all year.  I began to think about my heart not being right during Rob's message Wednesday night at church, but I still didn't feel right inside.

Jeremy is such a great speaker along with his amazing live performance in singing.  Listening to the words of his songs like Reckless, Jesus Saves, Overcome, and many more just made me think of how beautiful life is, and how we all have reasons to celebrate in who God is, no matter what the circumstances are.
He also talked about distractions.  I have a lot of those.  That is what I believe had made me unhappy, becuase the things of this world don't make me happy.  My joy comes from finding satidfaction in my salvation.  We both feel that He is coming soon!  Jeremy mentioned living in the anticipation of His coming.  There is no reason to waste the time we've been given on things that don't amount to anything.  We should "raise a shout!  and let all the world know that Jesus Saves!"  We also share a favorite verse:  Acts 20:24  "However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace."
I am motivated to do whatever God wants me to.  It is really hard to put myself behind, and I stuggle daily with prioritizing.  I want people to hold me accountable for my actions and words, becuase I am not here to please people or myself, but to bring glory to God.

This is my friend Brooke who came with me.  She loves Christian music and concerts, too.  I love having friends that I can praise the Lord with!

There was a "meet-and-greet" and autograph signing after the concert, too.  Stands were set up selling CDs, small posters, necklaces, a variety of Tshirts, and his book, I Still Believe.  He talked a little about what it is written about during the concert, and it really interested me.  My favortie books are true and inspriational words by people like this.  They hold my attention and challenge me to live a better life for Christ.  Jeremy's expericed a tragic time in his life (I won't give it away if you choose to read and don't already know), and he writes about how his faith was challenged and how He abides in God to overcome life's terrible circumstances and comes to rest in the joy, peace, and love of Christ.  Several of his songs are also written during this time.  I can't wait to get started reading!

I wanted to add this little off-topic bit from the evening, because it was a new place I got to try!  These frozen yogurt shops are popping up everywhere!  For me, this is very exciting.
Before leaving home, I looked up restaurants near this part of Greeneville.  The place we ended up for dinner was also new for us, and quite tasty!  I am a big fan of Mexican food.  The restaurant is called Monterrey's.
In the same shopping center is a self-serve froyo shop called Sweet CeCe's.  Every froyo shop has its own unique things, in my opinion, and this one is fantastic, too!  I really like how their cheesecake bites were quite large and very "cheesecakey."  All the toppings are set up in a neat arrangement; they are in tall tubes with turn knobs that drop it out the bottom!  This cup is cake batter, graham cracker, and pumpkin, with a little Heath inside and of course, cheesecake!
