Words for the Weary in a Wrecked World

I had the idea for this post a while ago, and I had wanted to add to it while things were fresh on my mind, but a lot of things in life happen, and I never did it, but here I am. I have actually really enjoyed taking a few days of my Bible study time to look back over things that stood out to me over the summer and beginning of school! It is so important to look back on what we learn. I also know that life is difficult, uncertain, and sometimes really discouraging, now maybe more than ever. That's why I want to take some of the things that have spoken to me and helped me through certain times and situations that I hope helps some of you, too.

Whatever your day may look like, take it one day at a time, doing what you can with where you are, but remember that as Christians, we can live with an eternal outlook. And what joy that eternal hope can bring to our daily lives!

"Be patient and stand firm, for the Lord's coming is near." James 5:8

"Continue to work out your salvation...for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing so that you may become blameless and pure children of God in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing." Philippians 2:12-16

When days seem like more than you can take...

"We pray this that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, joyfully giving thanks to the Father." Colossians 1:10-12

"...do it with the strength God provides so that in all things, God may be praised." 1 Peter 4:11

"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me...Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me." Psalm 51:10, 12

"The God of all grace who called you into eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast." 1 Peter 5:10

"[God's wise words] are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body." Proverbs 4:22

"He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my my weaknesses so that's Christ's power may rest on me...when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

"Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down by the anxieties of life...be on the watch, pray, and stand." Luke 21:34, 36

"I call on the Lord in my distress, and He answers me." Psalm 120:1

When you need motivation to do the right thing...

God is watching and working, and others see you, too

"Whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." John 3:21

"Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and run with perseverance the race marked out for us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith...consider Him who endured such opposition so that you do not lose heart." Hebrews 12:1-3

"Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15

"Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers." 1 Timothy 4:16

"Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31

"Stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." 1 Corinthians 15:58

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs that it may benefit those who listen." Ephesians 4:29

"In your hearts, set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a reason for the hope that you have, but do this with gentleness and respect...so that those who speak maliciously about your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil." 1 Peter 3:15-17

"Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ." Philippians 1:27

When you just need a break...

"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

"It is in vain that you rise up early and go to rest late, eating the bread of anxious toil, for He gives sleep to those He loves." Psalm 127:2

"Man shall not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4, and "Jesus declared, 'I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never go hungry nor be thirsty." John 6:35

"My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to Your word." Psalm 119:28

"I lie down and sleep in peace, for you along, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." Psalm 4:8

"I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint." Jeremiah 31:25

"Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will rise up on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31

"You were wearied by all your ways, but you would not say, 'It is hopeless.' You found renewal of your strength, and so you did not faint." Isaiah 57:10

When you feel held captive...

"You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:32

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by the yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:7

"Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." 2 Corinthians 3:17

When things feel out of your control...

"Do not be afraid. Stand firm, and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you...the Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." Exodus 14:13-14

"All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be." Psalm 139:16

"You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled." Joshua 23:14

"For the glory of Your name, O Lord, preserve my life. Because of Your faithfulness, bring me out of this distress." Psalm 143:11

"Be still and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10

When you feel like people are against you...

"Am I now trying to win the approval of men or of God? Am I trying to please mean? If I were trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ." Galatians 1:10

"Men will hate you because of Me, but those who stand firm until the end will be saved." Matthew 10:22

When you fear for your future...

"My God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

"Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned." Isaiah 43:2

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for the Lord has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" Hebrews 13:5

"[Do not] be arrogant, nor put hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but put their hope in God, who richly provides everything for our enjoyment...do good, be rich in good deeds, be generous and willing to share...take hold of the life that is truly life." 1 Timothy 6:17-19

Is not life more important than food...Who of you by worrying can add a single minute to his life?...your heavenly Father knows you need them...Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:25, 27, 33

"Do it Again" --Songs and Scriptures Series

--from my journal:
I thought surely by now I wouldn't be dealing with basically the same or related injuries from February, wouldn't be staying up so late, not getting enough or the right things to drink or eat, not moving past planning projects to actually doing them, etc, but I still have the same struggles. But every time God has never failed to bring me through the deepest pits. I keep waiting for my body to heal, but I know the main issues are in His hands. He's already won my salvation and eternity and planned out my life. Though there are many dark times, there is always a new morning and sunshine to look ahead to. God's word will stick to its promises. There will always be things I can sing about. He is always enough. I do not need health, money, school, sport, friends, family, anything. All I need is God's love. His promises to always be with me, always love me and care for me, provide, protect, give a hope and a future, save me a place in heaven, and more are still there and always will be. He is my confidence when the rest of the world fails (well, before the world fails!). He has never failed me. I've seen Him do things in my life that could not even be possible any other way. He's done it once and even again already. I can have full faith that He can work miracles again.

Walking around these walls
I thought by now they’d fall
But You have never failed me yet
Waiting for change to come
Knowing the battle’s won
For You have never failed me yet
…I know the night won’t last
Your word will come to pass
My heart will sing your praise again
Jesus You’re still enough
Keep me within Your love
My heart will sing Your praise again
…I’ve seen You move
You move the mountains
And I believe I’ll see You do it again
You made a way
When there was no way
And I believe I’ll see You do it again
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, Your faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never fail
…This is my confidence, You’ve never failed me yet

"Don't Give Up" --Songs and Scripture Series

Shop and Save with ibotta

Through the past few weeks of struggling with set backs and general stress of life, there have been some themes, songs, and scriptures that God keeps bringing back to me. When there are things that I have that sure feeling that it is from Him, I get so excited and want to share, and I feel like that is what He wants us to do.
"As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard." Acts 4:20

For a long time I've liked to do Bible studies with songs and how they relate to my life and draw on scripture, and I can end up going so much farther than a simple devotion, learning so much! The words of music can be so uplifting, too. So I want to take what has touched my heart and life through songs and scripture lately and share it for anyone else who may need some encouragement from it as well.

by Calling Glory

This time your heart said it's had enough
Sick and tired of everything that's so messed up
...praying hard somehow that your life will change
When you feel like you don't know what to do
Stuck inside this maze you can't go through
...these walls around you are caving in
And your life seems like it is wearing thin
Your hope is drowning in despair
Looks like you're not going anywhere
Step inside this heart and then you'll see
Such a love that is so amazing
...Don't give up
Help is surely on its way
Don't give up
The dark is breaking in today
Just keep on moving through these storms
Soon enough you'll find the door
Just don't give up

This song came on my playlist one morning as the first one shuffled while I was doing core. It’s an older song, but considering “don’t give up” was something I had had to keep telling myself through these toughest days, it was fresh for the time. It has seemed like it is one thing after another, and I didn’t know how much more I could take. I want change, but I don’t know when or what will come. At times I just don’t know what to do with myself and feel like I can’t break out of whatever the issue at hand is. One day, I really began to lose hope in my future like I may never get to enjoy the things I love again. I can’t get over these injuries that are all connected to each other, can’t get my use of time or doing things on track. But I have to embrace His love that is greater than all my pains and challenges and not give up. Though some days are dark, there is light of another day coming. Now I can see, a few days later, that I was in pain and distress, but I was also so close to my back injury having relief. Now I am in a different physical pain, but I’ve got to get through this one, too. God may have relief for this waiting on me soon, too.

What God’s Word says:

“But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” 2 Chronicles 15:7

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out of us, fixing our eyes on Jesus…consider Him who endured such opposition so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3

“…Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14

“Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the Word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly, we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God…for what we preach is not of ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as servants for Jesus’s sake. For God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness’…We have this treasure to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not us. We are hard-pressed on every side but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our bodies the death of Jesus, that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our bodies.” 2 Corinthians 4:1-2, 5-10 (***see a note below!)

“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion in the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6

“Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary; what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

“I know that You can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.” Job 42:2

“Consider it pure joy, brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4

“We know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade…In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, honor, and glory when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen Him, you believe in Him and love Him, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” 1 Peter 1:3-9

***While many of these passages came to mind right away, this was one that really jumped out as I began searching.>>Because of God’s mercy, I have this opportunity to share His goodness, and that is enough to keep me going! I can turn from lying and deceiving (myself and any others), hiding the pain that I bring on myself, using God’s power to my own advantage. I must be true, both for the sake of my own faith and to show the truth to others. Everything I say and do is because of and for God, not myself. I am useless and selfish on my own. My purpose is to serve Christ and others and to bring Him glory. He is and wants us to also be the lights shining into darkness. All the good things that happen, possessions, experiences, feelings, blessings, etc. are all gifts from God to be used to show His power. I did not get here by my own efforts. At times it feels like everything is caving in on me, but I do not get crushed. I get confused and discouraged, but I am never without something to cling to. Outside people and circumstances may work against me, but Christ never leaves me. I’m never alone. He is always there and always sends me reminders of His promises. I get knocked down, but I am never done for good. Each day I ought to walk as one displaying Christ and what He has done so that the life-saving message may be seen through whatever I do.

Unique Holidays: May

Instagram

Since it was the end of school, May was cray, but I was so glad to finally be on the home stretch that I didn't care.  Things would be going on this month that I would never get to/have to do again, so I tried to make the most of it.

"Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments."  Deuteronomy 7:9
"No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other.  You cannot serve both God and wealth."  Luke 16:13
"You cannot drink of the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons."  1 Corinthians 10:21

This one was easy!  I always have some chocolate and vanilla stuff on hand because it can be simple, quick, and go with just about anything. For this occasion I threw in a little bit of everything: pudding, cool whip, frozen yogurt, granola, sprinkles, cookies, dark chocolate, etc

I always drink water, but if I can get my hands on some flavored water, I won't pass it up. Our hotel in Colorado gives freebies at the front desk, so over the trip I grabbed a bunch of these to bring home.

2nd
truffle
Truffles are a delectable dessert that have just become part of my menu in recent months, and I am so glad they have!  This is mostly thanks to mom who shared her Christmas treats with me and bought me some at the Godiva store over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now I have found all kinds of recipes for so many flavors, just waiting in my list for me to make them!
In the mean time, I've eaten the store bought ones, and truffle flavored things, like ice cream.

3rd
chocolate custard

One of the places on my bucket list was Culver's, and I got that checked off after the state track meet!  Here I got both chocolate and vanilla custard, swirled with butterfinger, kit kat, and Heath.

raspberry popover
Another one that I used what I had on hand to be creative. I used bread lining the muffin cups, filled with a mix of raspberries and a raspberry coconut Buddy Fruits squeeze and baked it til it looked done to me!

teacher appreciation

Teachers have it rough. I used to want to be one, but I feel like there are too many restrictions now that it takes all the fun away. So for those who are persevering to be a light into our school systems, I really do appreciate you and pray for you often!  My mom tells me lots from working in the office, too. There is so much that most people will never know. Thank you all for the extra time you put in outside the hours you are paid for. These kids need you. You are the only light some of them may ever see!

4th

bird
That cute/crazy looking bird was one that had just hatched from my friend Julia's house, and she sent me a snapchat of it!  It's some kind of chicken thing!
Second is the most talkative bird I know...Robin, my mom!  I made her pose with those dark chocolate caramel robin eggs because they matched her, and I never knew when I may need it!

candied orange peel
orange juice
We had a breakfast party, and mom went a little overboard on the OJ.  This jug was huge, but there was anoter one in the fridge, too!  Oh well, it will be a treat for Dad!

bike to school day
I wish!  But that's okay...I'm taking my bike to Lipscomb!

5th
Cinco de Mayo
I'm not Hispanic, but I love Mexican food, so I basically celebrate this multiple times a week!

hoagie
Not my fav, but Dad has recently been picking mom up and taking her to lunch at a local business we have, The Hoagie Shop.

totally chipotle
This one was no problem to celebrate either!  I love adobo, chipotle peppers in sauce, kinda similar to a spicy barbeque. I also use chipotle chili powder to sprinkle on foods.

Day of Prayer
Prayer is one of the best things you can do!  I love it so much!  Anytime, anyplace, anywhere, anything.  God wants to talk to you!  It's such a great way to connect and really get your mind and heart calmed.  It also works wonders encouraging others.
"Do not worry about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:6-7
"Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.  The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."  James 5:16

6th
beverage

Some of my favorites that ice had this month...I can't wait to get to Lipscomb so I can have the Lifewater and Sunkist enhanced waters anytime I'm in the caf!  Panera's fruity green teas are also one of the few places I will buy a drink rather than get free water. And obviously coffee. No brainier.

7th
scrapbook
Mom and I used to be huge scrapbookers, always up to date throughout each year's main events. We haven't had time in u don't even know when, but I really miss it. I have tons to things piled up waiting to be matched with pages, but I still haven't gotten around to it. Instead I've made small ones along the way, like this one for my moms Mother's Day card!

birth mothers
Again, what mom wants for her special occasion is Little Caesars pizza.

Mothers Day (Sunday, so date changes)
No matter the length or color of our hair, shape of our glasses, or year of our life, we love the summer sun, but more importantly, we love each other and love the Lord.  My mom and mamaw are just beautiful.

8th
coconut cream pie

9th
butterscotch brownie

Not a butterscotch brownie, but some butterscotch fudge ice cream is pretty darn close.

10th
shrimp
One of my favorite proteins!  I make it when I'm on my own for dinner and sometimes when we go out.

11th
foam rolling
Considering I'm a runner, you would think this would excite me, but I'm not a roller.

12th
nutty fudge
Homemade this with chopped cereal, nuts, and melted chocolate then let it cool in the fridge.

13th
apple pie
Wish I had some pie, but instead made an apple pie dessert bowl with an apple pie yogurt and that other stuff up there!

14th
dance like a chicken
We had a race this day, so I suggested that we all do it on the start line, but that wasn't a very good idea.

15th
chocolate chip
The best kind of chip is a chocolate chip and the best chocolate chips are dark. They should also always be in cookies. Like these!

16th
love a tree
Why I love trees:  they are green and pretty, give us air, some give us fruit, shade, block the wind, help us celebrate Christmas, and are used in the Bible for some awesome parallels.

18th
visit your relatives
Yes, these are from Christmas, but that's my favorite time to visit my relatives. We have such a great time!  Savor the memories...

I love Resee's
Why yes I do!  And every time I see Reese's I think of Jenna ever since I learned how much she loves them at Motown Madness several years ago. At our church senior night, we had ice cream sundaes with Reese's pieces as one of the toppings, so I had to tell Jenna about this holiday!

19th
devil's food cake
All these are basically Devils food cake (or the flavor). And how cute are those gift mug cakes!?  Get them at Rowena's!

20th
pick strawberries
I had been telling mom for a long time that I wanted to go pick some of our own strawberries at the local patch across from her school, and she finally took me! I had no idea how bright red they are when they are that fresh!  We got a whole gallon.

bike to work
My dad actually used to do this when he worked farther away so he could get in a workout and get to work at the same time!

endangered species
I decided to go on the US Fish and Wildlife website to see some of these endangered species and refined my results just to Tennesse, surprised to see how many animals and plants that still included!  However, I shouldn't be surprised with the way this world is headed.
There were too many big words and abbreviations on there that I didn't understand.
However, on the World Wildlife Fund site (which I used to be a member of back in my childhood nature fanatic years), there is a great list that you can actually understand!
Here are some that I found and really appreciate:  species of lepards and tigers (I've always loved those big cats), lots of monkeys and their relatives (as I also used to be compared with a monkey), dolphins, pandas, sea lions, and more.

pizza party

In our family mom would be the champion of this one. However, Ultimate California Pizza at Myrtle Beach is pretty good since I can get mine personal size and with whatever I want on it!  Mom always wants pepperoni extra cheese, so I you want to make her day just take her some pizza.

21st
memo

strawberries and cream
S&C dessert blend

learn to swim
Who are we kidding I grew up on the lake. At the beach when I was teeny, my favorite thing to say was "play waters, play waters!"

22nd
vanilla pudding
The great thing about vanilla is that it can go with basically anything!  Sweet like with chocolate or fruit, or more savory like with sweet potato, oatmeal raisin, or carrot cake.

23rd
lucky penny

Post-race with just one more high school race to go.

24th
scavenger hunt

26th
blueberry cheesecake
No celebration here but in my imagination. Bring me some?

28th
hamburger

My favorite thing about hamburgers is finding new toppings for them.

31st
macaroon
I had never tried macaroons before because I didn't even think I would like them, but mom got a fancy and free box of them with a gift she bought at VS, so she gave them to me. They are actually really tasty!  I like how there was dark chocolate, cookie, and cream with them!

All Month Long
barbeque
What a great summer month meal!  Mom buys pork bbq to bake at home, we bbq chicken, and we get it out sometimes. Dickey's barbeque which has many locations and Martin's bbq in Nashville (and a few more) are my favorite!  (We went there while in Nashville after state most recently). But you also can't go wrong with our local favorites: Buddy's, and Weber (actually less than a mile from my house..always smells so good when I run by)

bike

chocolate custard
egg
The most impressive egg of the whole month takes this picture spot. The hotel we stayed at for track state my sophomore year, Embassy Suites, captured my moms heart with their huge breakfast buffet and made-to-order bar. So much so, that she booked her hotel there no matter where anyone else stayed!  But that meant that I got to stay there for one night, too!  Those chefs do a great job with so many pancakes, waffles, and omelettes.

hamburger
The best burger is a buffalo burger. Fuddruckers didn't have to tell me to try; I already know that's what I want.

Mediterranean diet
I didn't even know what this was until I saw it on the calendar and looked it up. I think could qualify most of the time!  I love fruits and vegetables and meat, so that fits pretty well!

photograph
Well, this shouldn't be hard because I love to take pictures to commemorate everything, so here's a random one from May.  I saw my math teacher from first semester in Food City.  Mr. Hayes is a funny guy.

salad
It has been about a month now since I've had a salad, but there for a while I was on a roll! That happens when we travel more, but sometimes we make them at home. These were from various places: Chick-full-a, Panera, home, the cafe at the beach, and Chili's.

salsa
You bet I can celebrate some salsa!
Moe's is my favorite restaurant to get it though because they have the bar where you get your own, some spicy and some seasonal!  I'll pretty much try any kind. Dad likes it, too, mild, for his chips. That personality picture was at my graduation dinner at Abuelos!

strawberry
May is prime strawberry time, as you can tell from all these strawberry-related celebrations this month. Let the fresh fruit and vegetable season begin!
