The Chloe Chronicles

Our newest family member Chloe recently celebrated her birthday around Christmas time, December 3rd, and now we are celebrating her year anniversary of living with us! I never got around to sharing too much about her, but this seems like a fitting time! Sadly, because of school and being out of town, I missed a lot of her little puppy days, but Mom gained her new baby girl. Though I was far away, she kept me updated on all the funny stories! She grew so fast, and is bigger than I would have imagined. I must say, she is the most unique dog I have ever met.
A lot of these are my pictures, but some are from Mom while I was away.

This is the story of Chloe in her first year in the family!

The day Chloe came home just so happened to be one of the few days that I came home for the weekend during second semester last year. Dad had texted me during class that morning and asked if I wanted to come home to go ski the next day, so I decided it was God telling me to take a break from life where I was (second semester was especially hard to get through), so I threw a bag together and headed home after class. It was a late night, but I finally got to El Sazon to meet Mom and Dad to eat, as we had made that our tradition for nights I came home. When we got home, I heard a funny noise in the basement, walked in and...a puppy!? What?!

It was not planned for Chloe to join us and me come home the same day. Dad asked me to go skiing before he ever even got the idea to get her. It just worked out perfectly! Later in the morning, he saw a post on Facebook by our local animal shelter that they had a new litter of black lab puppies ready to be adopted. Knowing our other dog is getting old and that we were moving to the lake soon, he sent the link to Mom and asked her if she wanted one. He went to pick one up on his lunch break. Chloe chose him more than he chose her, and that was the beginning of her loving personality! They decided not to tell me and let it be a surprise when I got home!

Little did we know from this first night that her crying and need for attention would only increase, but I wanted so badly to spend time with her (and for her to stop crying!) that I spent the night downstairs with her. I let her out of the pen to sleep with me, which was cute and all, until she jumped off the couch, pooped on the floor, and later I stepped in it. As if getting maybe 3 hours of sleep wasn't enough!
As you see, she did not like the sound of the vacuum, nor did she want me to leave. Neither did I.

Look at those puppy dog eyes! "Aren't I so cute? Love me!"

The Mom-Chloe bond begins!

She still likes to go for your face...

Frisco probably hates us now for this. Like people say stress takes years off your life, it's surprising Frisco is still alive! Poor thing is almost tortured by his new sister, and he seems so much older than even just a year ago!
The best/worst thing? Ya know how people joke about dogs chasing their tail? Chloe doesn't chase her tail, but she grabs onto Frisco's and pulls him across the yard! The fur on his tail is almost all gone now!

The bone may have looked big for her, but she devoured it quick enough.

Always wants something in her mouth...

This was the first picture Mom sent me when I realized how big she was getting so fast.

Cats and dogs may have funny stories about getting in fights, but there is nothing but love for the kitties from Chloe.

Getting this picture from Mom almost made me cry last year--I'm a daddy's girl, and I loved seeing him and Mom having a good time!

How this happened, we do not know, but it was one of the funniest things to ever see out our back door.

My shoes were also big toys for her, but she can destroy a shoe in a day. I was also mad that Mom gave her one of my prettiest pairs, but oh well.

Car ride and vet anxiety...it took Mom and me both holding and carrying her the whole way for her first trip! This was on my spring break, and we wondered how on earth they would do it when I wasn't there. She is not a one-man job!

Girl can eat. A lot.
And it is absolutely hilarious to watch her try to get on the deck through the railing! Then she gets stuck and can't wriggle herself back out!

She loves to help Mom with all her chores. She (and Frisco) do not always appreciate her help. Poor Frisco probably hates her. She never leaves him alone! They bark at each other for hours straight sometimes, and I tell Mom and Dad that the neighbors probably will be glad when we move. I've never seen him get so angry and growl like that until we got her! She loves to play, but he does not. Chloe does not understand that he doesn't like her in his business, nor does she understand when we yell at her. We have to pull them apart and put one of them in the kennel all the time.

Sun bathing?

Let's take a moment to see the struggle that led up to this cute picture at the end.

The end picture was my goal from the start, but I knew it would take a while to get there. Proof that photography is hard work.

In the chair, under the chair, next to the chair...everywhere!

I worked hard this spring and summer when I was home to get her used to walking on a leash, but it was way more difficult than you could imagine. It was more like she was walking me. Mom tried, too, and she would call and text me to tell me her stories. Sometimes our neighbors would watch for entertainment! It also cracked me up (and made me happy) that she would pull her so hard and fast that Mom would actually run across the yard!

She has been doing better, but you can never turn your back for long! Mom and I both get pummeled on a regular basis. As of the end of summer and into fall, she could go outside of the yard and through all of the neighborhood!

This picture was much less of a struggle than the other one! Partially because the railing kept her from doing too much damage.
She got a little eye gunk for a while, so Mom and Dad had to give her drops...which you can imagine was entertaining as well. It took them both and all the strength they had. But how cute is that medicine bag from the vet?!

She was amused by my cutting open and gutting that orange thing.

Causing trouble...she will get into anything she can. She chewed up parts of the deck, steps, air conditioner, etc. Dad had to build several things to keep her out of or from destroying important things. Here is where she broke the hose reel and drug it across the yard.

One of her good walk days! Once she did take off after a squirrel, though, and I almost face-planted. I couldn't hold her back nor could I run fast enough to hold on, so I just dropped the leash and let her go, praying she would come back.

Doing a rep picture project for Serengetee in one of my new shirts, Phoebe and Chloe both decided they wanted to be in the pictures, too, so I featured them and the brand.

For Chloe's birthday (and Mom's aching arms) she purchased a ball-thrower! Look how much energy Chloe was putting into going after that thing. She is that enthusiastic about everything she does.

For Christmas she got a new bone! That didn't last long.

Phoebe was also interested.

But really, who needs to make purchases on dog toys when you have a runner in the family with tons of old shoes? I think she liked that better anyways. Shoes can be chewed through in a day or two. I'm not a total cheapskate, though. I also bought her and Frisco some new treats, shampoo, and itch spray!

Chloe also got to play in her first big snow this January! As if she needed anything else to entertain her...I couldn't pass up the opportunity to go out and play with the pups in the snow, so I put on some relaxed clothes before I took my shower (because I knew I was about to get dirty) and went out to play! During this time when there were several days and nights with temperatures in the single digits, we kept both dogs in pens in the basement at night. Poor things were all cramped up, but we didn't want them to freeze.

This is a rather scary sight to see coming at you! I made sure to brace myself for impact.

She may look and sound vicious, but it's all in love. She just doesn't understand how strong she is.

Along with being strong and loving, she is also very entertaining and photogenic!
She barks constantly, drives Frisco insane, wants to put everything in her mouth...but she has been a blessing to our family, and I can't wait to see how she loves the lake when we move this month!

The Moment Looks Good, but Eternity is Better

Not meaning to quote R-Swift, That Girl, which I heard this morning then used it for the title not even meaning to...wow, the little ways God brings things to you!

I don't know how else to put it except that life has been so wonderful lately. It is only two weeks into the year, and it has already been one of the best years of my life. There hasn't been anything big happen, just lots of small, yet meaningful and enjoyable things. I'm just daily in awe of the little blessings God is giving me. I keep a Word document of the things that stand out to me as messages from God, and it is awesome to keep note of. I might write a book one day, kind of like Chicken Soup and The Little Cabin on the Trail

I've been wanting to blog so many things for a while now, but honestly didn't know where to start I'm so behind, but today I just told myself to do this one. To begin, yes I am a communications major and full of words as it is, but there are times I get frustrated with this because there are just not words accurate enough to describe things God puts in my heart, but that's part of the mystery and beauty of who He is.

In these past couple weeks I have really come to see how great the past few years have come to be. No, they were not at all great in themselves, but where I am now is great, and I am made by everything that has happened to me. Both Pastor Dean's sermon and the video from Passion we watched in Sunday School today were right in line with all of this. I am amazed at how much more and more God connects things throughout daily life. (Is He doing more, or am I more open to seeing them?)

In Pastor Dean's sermon he referenced a passage that I had just done a couple days ago in my daily devotion, Philippians 3:13-14. I have a hard time sometimes thinking about my past and all the heartache and the mistakes I made, but I do not have to be bound by that. This passage and the words of our pastor encourage us to not be held back by the things in our past but to move forward, trusting God with our future.

The message we watched from Passion was spoken by Levi Lusko, a guy that I had heard brief clips of on KLove but never longer sermons or seen him. He is an awesome guy and probably now one of my favorite speakers ever. God has given him a way of holding attention and spreading the good news. This message he titled "Kicking the Bucket List." Well that stood out to me right off the bat because I am the kind of person who makes lists everywhere of everything I need and want to do. Not that we should not set goals, but we shouldn't be so caught up in them, making life about always striving to do bigger and better things.

The focus passage he used was 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (see bottom of page for verses), one that I have used a lot in the past going through hard times, but this brought me to look at it from the other side, too. Then I would use it to help me through trouble knowing that there were better things ahead. Now, as things are going well, it helps me to stay humble and not get caught up in things, remembering that there are even greater things ahead. "The more you look forward to the next life, the less you will need from this world" was his summary of the message. Knowing the greatness of heaven awaits allows us to live now in service, perseverance, and enjoyment of each day where God has us. Instead of always striving for more, we can enjoy the simple blessings He has given us right here. This has been one of the biggest things of my life that I have been overflowing with joy and contentment in. I thank God everyday for the little things I am currently able to enjoy. My life is nothing special, but at the same time, it is because God has made it so.

A question he asked that was a challenge to me, and likely almost everyone in this day and time was, "Would you still do it if you couldn't brag or post about it?" Hm. I love to share the things I do, but I need to watch my heart that I am sharing things to show the good that God is doing, not to make myself look good or feel better. We are called to be good at what God has called us individually to do, not in comparison to others. Colossians 3:17 says to do whatever we do to the glory of God.

I also struggle from FOMO, fear of missing out, and multitasking, another part of my nature to do, do, do, but focusing on what God has for me helps me be content with less. Levi continued on these things (and my life) with living simply, quality over quantity, and being content. These are times I giggle to myself because God told me that, too, and now here He is, telling me again through another person. I have this renewed desire to simplify my life. I get stressed out when there are too many things, whether it be my schedule, my to-do list, or stuff on my desk or laying in the floor, and I have found much more peace when I clean things out. I don't need so many different things going on but just enough things that are meaningful. As Christmas break is ending, I am finally getting to the things that I had saved for when I got slowed down. Sometimes I have to get rid of distractions so I can focus on better things. For me, this has been everything from going through a stack of comics on the table, finishing a bottle of body wash, letting Mom do more of my grocery shopping, going slower on Bible studies when they are good and not doing a certain amount each day, to finishing a bag of cookies, among more.

I now have a job, am about to start second semester classes and an internship and possibly another job, and I babysit. All these are new within the past month-ish. So many new things, and a new fire in my heart to serve God with it all. I have lots of goals and dreams, but I am not set on them anymore. I don't expect things to happen. The past has taught me that. Only God is certain. I thought it was awesome when Levi closed up the message with a reference to Psalm 37:4, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart." I had just told myself this a few days ago because I am simply joyful in daily life, which is a gift from God. That's all I really want in life, to enjoy wherever I am. He said, "Don't follow your dreams; follow God, and He will give you the desires of your heart." I have been through a lot of good and bad, but the best comes when I let go and let God take control. In the car after a slightly stressful night at work last night, the song Control by Tenth Avenue North on the radio brought me to tears.

God, You don't need me, but somehow You want me
Oh, how You love me, somehow that frees me
To take my hands off of my life and the way it should go
God, You don't need me, but somehow You want me
Oh, how You love me, somehow that frees me
To open my hands up and give You control

I've had plans shattered and broken
Things I have hoped in, fall through my hands
You have plans to redeem and restore me
You're behind and before me
Oh, help me believe

You want me
The King of Heaven wants me
So this world has lost its grip on me

****
Philippians 3:13-14 "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

Why I might be from Whoville

It may sound contradictory, but it just wouldn't be Christmas without the Grinch!
This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and it will never get old. Mom and I have always watched it over and over every year, but this year I went all the way to December 23rd and hadn't seen it through once! So that day, I watched it twice. The first time was on my own downstairs wrapping Christmas presents--one of my favorite days of the whole year. "It's joyful and triumphant" for me! The second time was that night on the 25 days of Christmas with Mom and Dad. This year I realized that I can basically quote the entire movie.

While I may love the Christmas season with all my heart and could be a fellow citizen of Whoville, even I have ways that I can relate to the Grinch.
I love to dance, and Christmas just brings it out more. (At my future Christmas parties, you bet we will have dancing.)
That's why I am naturally so festive.
 Ahh, pudding...

Bargain shopping is basically like a hobby.

 More partying!

Where the majority of my money goes every year. I save up all year and even buy Christmas presents if I find something in the middle of summer.

Every year I get more sentimental! It's bittersweet. I love it, but I feel ya, Cindy Lou, "my world is changing" and it means so much more!

This is the picture of my favorite day of the year--full of holiday cheer.

It truly is the simple things in life that fill my heart with the most joy, and that is a joy that I know comes from the Lord. It is not from things, but from Him. There would be no Christmas without Him, so there is no way to feel the true Christmas spirit only celebrating from a worldly view. There would be something missing. People long for meaning in life and in the everyday tasks they do, and this fulfillment is only found in Christ. It doesn't matter how many gifts you buy, wrap, give, receive, parties you host or attend, or family members you visit, etc., if there is no Christ in it. Who wants to celebrate "mas"?

"For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever, Amen!" Romans 11:36

A year ago today...

Today I realized that it was exactly one year from the day my life path was suddenly changed in ways I never imagined. I hated my life. I thought it was over. But little did I know that looking back on that event, I would be thankful. It was not the end, but the start to a new and better life. God sends us good things, but never leaves us at good; He wants the best for us. A year later, I am not where I ever imagined myself to be, but I am content and seeing God's blessings all around me. The past year has been the hardest year of my life, and I would never wish it upon anyone, but I know that is why God helped me through it, so now I can use it as a testimony to help and encourage others through their troubles. It may have broken me at the time and broken me in other steps along the way, but where I stand today, I and my faith are stronger than they have ever been.

It's National Pumpkin Day, Charlie Brown!

October 26th is National Pumpkin Day! You may have even celebrated without purposely doing so; it is hard to escape this gourd in October. Maybe a candle, lotion, candy corn, Jack-O-Lantern, or latte? I don't have class on Thursdays, so I enjoy extra time at home and sat out in the sun and leaves for a little me time, followed by Mom and Dad gone to the construction site (aka our new house--it is a house now, not just dirt!), I had dinner with me and watched the movie, too.
I didn't eat pumpkin this meal (but I did with breakfast!), but I roasted a butternut squash, and they're cousins. On that note, I learned all kinds of things about pumpkins over the past few weeks as I prepared for my informative speech in one of my classes! We were told that a good topic should be relevant to our audience, the time of year, society, etc., important to us, and interesting in general, so considering it is October and I am a young person, what more relevant that pumpkins!?
My favorite kind of school work is the kind that is applicable to real life, so I thought it would be interesting to share with others, too! I hope you learn something new about this plant today!
This time of year there is one fruit that is especially popular. It shows up everywhere from ice cream shops to nursing homes, it’s eaten, displayed, and even played with. Who has any guesses what this fruit is? ……  Yes! Pumpkin is a fruit!
I may not have a pumpkin patch in my back yard, but I was the star in my first grade class play as “the littlest pumpkin,” and now I have done my research to really know more.

So now I will tell you about the history, uses, and popularity of pumpkins.
HISTORY:
Like we just learned a minute ago, pumpkins are technically fruits, not vegetables. They are part of the gourd family along with cucumbers and squash. The name pumpkin comes from the Greek word “pepon” which means “large melon.” They are native to Central America and Mexico, but are now grown on 6 continents. Over 90% of the processed pumpkins in America come from Illinois, according to the University of Illinois’s website.
Native Americans were the first people in our country to make use of pumpkins by weaving them into mats and slicing strips to roast over a fire to eat.
Colonists created the first pumpkin pies, though quite different from what we bake today. They sliced the top off, took the seeds out, and filled it with milk, honey, and spices, then baked it in hot ashes.
Today’s Jack-O-Lanterns also have an interesting evolution from long ago in an old Irish myth. A man named Stingy Jack was drinking and made a wager with the devil over who would pay for it. Because the devil vowed not to take his soul, but God wouldn’t let him in heaven either, Stingy Jack was left with only a light to guide him as he wandered the earth ever since, referred to as “Jack of the Lantern” which was shortened to today’s Jack-O-Lantern. Traditionally, these were carved from turnips or potatoes to scare away evil spirits, but when Irish immigrants came to America, they realized pumpkin are the perfect plant to use.

America gets pumpkin fever when fall rolls around, but America can’t take the credit for this plant.

USES:
Now that we know how pumpkins got here, let’s talk about what they are used for.
Not only are they tasty and trendy, they’re healthy, too!
Pumpkins contain more potassium than bananas, which helps balance electrolytes.
Vitamin C and zinc help your immune system.
The fiber in pumpkins helps keep you full and your heart healthy, and the large dose of vitamin A enhances your vision.
If you have some pumpkin with your turkey on Thanksgiving, all that tryptophan may put you right to sleep!
Pumpkins get their orange color from beta-carotene, that, along with other antioxidants, help fight certain diseases and cancers.
You can even eat the seeds, which provide magnesium and copper, and their protein and healthy fats combined with the carbs in raw pumpkin basically make it a complete meal by itself.
Over 40 varieties exist, but Autumn Gold is usually considered the best for being the stereotypical orange gourd. Other types and their best uses are usually labeled at the store.
Beyond the plain pumpkin, they are displayed for looks and used as the model for all kinds of home décor. I mean, have you ever walked in Hobby Lobby?
Carving Jack-O-Lanterns is one of the seasonal traditions, and more recently, simply painting them is, too.
Even bath and body brands utilize pumpkin in seasonal air fresheners, candles, and lotions.
One of the first things people think of now with pumpkin season is the plethora of food. There’s pumpkin doughnuts, muffins, pancakes, oatmeal, cereal, milk, and coffee for breakfast; yogurt, cream cheese, bread, and peanut butter for lunch; salsa, chips, popcorn, crackers, granola bars for snacks; soups and casseroles for dinner; all the way to cake, ice cream, cookies, cheesecake, and milkshakes for dessert. Shoot, you can even get pumpkin flavored chewing gum, cough drops, and beer. Basically, if you want pumpkin, you can find it in any food form this time of year.
People today also use pumpkins for a source of entertainment, as there are pumpkin patches, festivals, and competitions across the country.
So if you ever thought that pumpkin was simply a plant, now you see there is almost nothing a pumpkin cannot do.
POPULARITY:
Now the simple pumpkin has basically gained the popularity of a celebrity. It is an icon of the fall season. But it has not always been that way. The popularity of the pumpkin as we know it today rose thanks to social media.
The famous drink, the pumpkin spice latte, has been promoted so heavily by Starbucks, that it has been personified on Twitter and Instagram with the handle @TheRealPSL with over 114 and 37 thousand followers, respectively.
And as of the middle of this month, #PumpkinSpice has well over 1 million posts. Caramel apples have less than ¾ of that.
According to BusinessInsider.com, pumpkin spice foods and drinks provide over $500 million in annual sales.
The grocery store Trader Joe’s takes one of the leading roles in producing and selling pumpkin products, many that people will go especially to that store to get, myself am guilty.
Outside of eating and drinking them, growing and celebrating them is even a huge activity now, culminating at many fall festivals around the country. Can you imagine growing a pumpkin that weighed 1810 pounds? History.com announced that is the weight of the heaviest pumpkin on record right now, grown by a man in Minnesota.
But the largest pie beats even that. Recorded by the World Record Academy, it was 3699 pounds!
This visual from Google Trends can help you see how much we glamorize this gourd during the few fall months. You can see the sharp peak the week of Halloween, then a sharp decline afterwards with a smaller peak the week of Thanksgiving.
The top related searches are squash, pumpkin patch, recipes, pie, and Jack-O-Lantern, but to my surprise, the famous PSL was #17.
Interest by region shows that the pumpkin craze is highly westernized, as America, Australia, and Canada are in the 100th, 99th, and 87th percentile.
So if you feel like pumpkins are everywhere you go right now…they are.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now we know more about the pumpkin beyond that it is a trendy fall food; we know where it came from, what it is used for, and how popular it is.
Sorry to break it to you, but you can’t get your daily servings of fruit from your morning latte, but you can from a can.
